Dirty, dirty, oh so dirty!

Tonight. Last night at Union. Guster at RPI. Oh the fun.
In all honesty, I don't think Guster is the best live show out there. I really loved Idlewild and I think that's probably the best live show I've been to. Guster is pretty mediocre in the live thing... but it was still fun!
First of all, a big thanks to Rachel who drove Danny, Rob and myself to RPI - she was going with some other friends who she was meeting there. Without her, we may have not gotten lost, I mean, we may have had to take public transportation which is no fun late at night. And we only got a little lost. Anyway, Guster hadn't posted an opening band just about anywhere including our tickets so we didn't know what to expect when 8 PM rolled around. Guster has been touring with John Mayer (opening for him, actually) and they made a few "We're on stage for more than 45 minutes!" jokes throughout the show. This evening, however, our opening band was Ingram Hill, a rock-ish band from somewhere in the south. To explain them in terms that most will understand, Ingram Hill was a lot like the style of the group Train doing Drops of Jupiter only a lot less catchy. Take Drops of Jupiter and put crappy lyrics to it (I don't really know the current lyrics to it...) and then repeat that with different crappy lyrics and you have their entire set. Needless to say, we were excited for Guster to arrive.
Guster played the usual rounds of new songs from Keep It Together with a really bad version of The Prize thrown in. Other interesting songs played were Medicine and Parachute... one of which was the Bible version and the other of which Joe Pisapia rocked out on. It's really sad that I can't remember which they did with what. Joe's been playing with Guster on the KIT tour and actually wrote "Jesus on the Radio" with Guster. He's a really awesome, if only temporary, addition to the group and it'll be sad to see him go when he starts doing his own stuff or stuff with Joe, Marc's Brother again. They ended with Brian singing again... he was much better this time but I was hoping for Nothing But Flowers. I need to hear that live! To my amazement, I was one of exactly two ping pong ball throwers that I saw. As has been the tradition, I always throw a ping pong ball on stage at the end of Airport Song and I suppose that's going to way of the dodo... pity really. Perhaps this is one of the downsides of so many people liking Guster. I don't have a problem with Guster gaining as much of a fan base as humanly possible but when fans start competeing for who's a bigger fan or who's been a fan for a longer time, it's just out of hand. Who really cares, anyway? This happens with a lot of bands and I really hate to see it.
The pictures were taken with Danny's teeny-cam which takes crappy pictures. I've scaled them down because they look even worse at their original resolution. After the concert, we stopped at the Krispy Kreme drive through (who knew they had a drive through?) and there was actually a line (at 11-something at night even!). Those donuts are too tasty for their own good.
That's about it for my last night at Union. It's been... a trip. Surely I'll post more indepth about what I liked/disliked and what I'll be up to in the near future.
Comments
Actually, I like the photos - they look artsy.
I think Guster concerts are awesome - I have to disagree with you! They always involve the audience and they appreciate us - I like that feeling.
Yes, Idlewild was over the top - they had a raw energy that you could feel.
And as for the Krispy Kreme drivethrough - ick! Let's allow the fat Americans to sit in their cars and eat donuts! We no longer have to even stand to get every junk food imaginable. There should be a law that you must walk 6.4 kilometers to purchase pastries! Or maybe we'll invent drivethrough gastric by-pass surgery....
