Ah, "break"

December 28, 2004

Yes, it's break time. Yes, I'm still working.
Christmas evening was spent with some friends which was good. The rest of this week I'm working in the mostly-empty office which is getting me out of the apartment and giving me some more free time to do other stuff. I'm sure it'll be strange as people come back to the office and it turns from my silent workspace to a busy company again. All the same, I'll enjoy having people around again.

I've been doing a lot of brainstorming on what I want to create and making a lot of headway on my plugin for MT. MTStats (the plugin) is feeling less and less like a creation of mine and more like a solution to a problem - that is, not having stats for my blogs. I still crave creation and I keep coming back to robotics. Another one of those things I'll miss from college will be four years of being able to say "Hey, I want to make a robot and I need to machine a few parts. I'll go talk to someone at the machine shop." I don't have such limitless supplies of whatever at my disposal and so I've gotta work around it. I've been trying to find some sort of kit that will give me some fairly advanced programmable electronics and materials to build with.
That said, I've not completely forgetten creation on the software side of things. I've got a few side projects that I'm working on slowly. Release of MTStats takes first priority. And if you didn't notice, zeroconf purposefully died so it can return as something... more relevent to what I'm doing. I hate it when I build something only to realize that it doesn't fit what I want to do. I suppose it's better than trying to force it to fit.

Lastly, I've been listening to some new and old music. Rufus Wainwright's Want Two is an absolutely amazing record that I can't tear myself away from. Also in heavy rotation is a few Air albums, Pinback's new Summer in Abbadon and some old Kraftwerk. Lastly, Everything But The Girl's Like The Deserts Miss The Rain (new to me, must have been the late 80's or early 90's though) album has some excellent non-80's songs on it. It also has a few quintessential 80's tracks which are... not my favorite.

More-than-lastly, William Gibson's Pattern Recognition is excellent. I doubt I'll give a full review after I'm done but I recommend it.

Comments

I picked up Want Two a few weeks ago, but I'm having trouble getting into it.

I've never really been into any of his albums, just a few songs here and there, but there's a handful of covers he's recovered for film soundtracks I just love: Accross the Universe, Complainte De La Butte and my absolute favorite, his cover of Hallelujah.

Ah Everything but the girl, that brings back some memories. A slightly belated Happy New Year!

Yay, Pinback. Love Absolutely Kosher.. except Summer in Abaddon was on Touch and Go. Despite that, good choice.
