Audio Passthrough with AU Lab
July 31, 2005
I like to avoid playing music through those awful white earbuds whenever possible but this puts me in a little predicament. I've got two macs in two different locations and although I do enjoy syncing things across both of them, I don't think that syncing my entire music collection is a logical choice. So how do I keep my music on my mac Mini and play it through the speakers on my iMac? iPod and AU Lab.
The Mac OS X (10.4) developer tools have this nifty audio tool included in Applications/Audio that has a million and one uses. You can set up an input device (the audio-in port) and an output device (built-in audio) and play anything through your output device. AU Lab is probably suited for much more complex tasks, of course - you can apply a number of effects to your Master Out or include a number of inputs. Although I haven't tested it yet, you can even record your Master Out - probably an excellent way to make archival copies of old records if you've got a component-to-1/8" audio adapter.
