Review: Peter Pan - The slightly newer movie

December 31, 2003

Tonights adventure was to the new Peter Pan movie. I had good and bad things to say about it.
First, let's get the bad out of the way. Peter Pan himself was the worst child actor to ever walk the face of the earth. At first, it seemed like all the children couldn't act but then as the dialouge improved, Peter was the only boy left standing in the bad-actor dust.
That taken care of, I thought the movie was absolutely great. The director was able to capture the feeling and lines from the original play script which only made the movie that much better to me since I had once been in the show. He did add a few lines which kindof put me off but I can't decide if that was because they weren't in the original show or because they really were terrible lines. It captured enough storyline that any normal person could follow it but left out enough little details that it was suitable for younger children to understand most, if not all of the movie. It's Peter Pan, I'm going to figure that everyone knows the ending of the story so I'm not going to worry about the ending being ruined for you. If you don't, there's a spoiler up ahead. Don't look.
I was a little upset that they didn't use the typical end to the story where Wendy grows up and Peter visits every spring until he eventually forgets about her. Continuing with the theme of a tragic version of Peter (which first caught my attention at eclecticism), I think the different ending would have added well but obviously the director did not think in the same way. I did like the rest of that theme although sometimes I felt like Peter could have loved Wendy but then again, maybe it was just his terrible acting.

A good buy. Go out and see it, especially if you're a fan of the original work. You'll only be let down a little.

Comments

I'm really afraid to see this movie. Peter Pan was one of my favorite stories as a kid, and I've worn out more than one copy of the Mary Martin play. I really hope that you're right, and that it won't be as bad as I expect it to be. From the adds it just looks so.. I don't know, flashy? And I was like "WTF? Wasn't Mary Martin good enough for them?!" and then my sister kindly pointed out that it was only a play that was video taped, so I kindly flipped her off. teehee.
