Review: Syberia 2

April 10, 2004

I had high hopes. I haven't played a new adventure game in years probably and when I played the demo for this game, I was quite excited that I'd get to play a new, nice looking adventure game. Sadly, I was wrong. This game holds true to the adventure type but doesn't quite cut it in terms of plot and game design. Let's have a more specific look... During the demo, you were trapped in a house with a bear patrolling the front door and you can't get out. A book on the shelf explains a little snippit about Orange Salmon and how they feed on green frogs in shady water downstream from waterfalls. It also suggests that they're a welcome treat for bears. Using this information, you can find yourself a fishing pole near the river out back and fish with a specific lure in a specific spot for this orange salmon to give to the bear so it goes away. This is how and adventure game should be set up, plain and simple. The information you need to complete a certain part of the game should be available, although it might be hidden from plain sight. Randomly trying items on other items even though you don't understand how that would help you is not what I want to do during and adventure game - it's BORING. I understand that frusteration is a regular part of these games but AFTER the frusteration you normally say to yourself "Oh! They gave me a clue about that and I didn't pay attention to it. Stupid me." but everytime I overcame a frusterating part in this game (mostly by just randomly trying to use EVERYTHING on EVERYTHING ELSE), I just thought "I still don't get it, how should I have known to do that?" and I don't think that makes a good game. I give it a poor rating even though it's an adventure game in a world that clearly prefers FPS'. I cry for the lack of a new Sam and Max game - Give me another 'Day of the Tentacle!'

This is pretty funny...I was looking at Sam's website and I asked someone (I forget who) who designed it, because I didn't think Sam knew that much about designing and the site looks so awesome. I actually thought you might have designed it, but I wasn't sure until I found where it said designed by authgeek!

Sad to here this didnt live up to expectation. I have read glowing reviews of the first Syberia and have been trying to convince myself to pick it up but I just have too much stuff in the queue.
