NO SLEEP

August 4, 2005

I'm not sleeping tonight. At least I'll try for that goal.

I ended up working late on some projects and by the time 12AM came and went... there's not a whole lot of point going home. I'll be updating all night with my status. I've got plenty of projects to work on, both work and non-work related and I think I can keep busy enough to just listen to music and hack the night away.

1AM: Not one hour in to this all-nighter I've burnt myself on the soldering iron I picked up the other day. I really blantantly reached out and touched it too - I felt like a total idiot. Big nasty blister forming at the moment. I'm going to go dip it in some cold water...

I want a warning - Idlewild - Warnings/Promises
For You - Barenaked Ladies - Everything to Everyone
Firefly - Tortoise - Standards
Maybe Katie - Barenaked Ladies - Everything to Everyone
Stuck in the 90's - Moxy Fruvous - Bargainville
A Message - Coldplay - X & Y
Paranoia - Sam Roberts Band - We Were Born in a Flame
All I Know - Basement Jaxx - Rooty
Not Today - Jump, Little Children - Magazine
Who's Stopping You - Semisonic - All About Chemistry
Black Plastic - Ladytron - Light & Magic

2AM Still feeling good two hours in to it. I'm back in the coding groove that I took a break from earlier to try out my soldering iron. My burnt finger is OK, it seems. It started hurting more around 1.30 but it's back down again. I've been letting it sit in cold water for a couple minutes here and there but you can't really type well that way. Working on another plugin for MT that should be well on it's way to functionality before the rest of the world wakes up.

Say It Again - Badly Drawn Boy - The Hour of the Bewilderbeast
Shallow End - Morcheeba - Fragments of Freedom
Goodnight Elisabeth - Counting Crows - Recovering the Satellites
Shadows - Rufus Wainwright - Poses
I Don't Believe You - The Magnetic Fields - I
Eden - Guster - Parachute
I Summon You - Spoon - Gimme Fiction
In My Place - Coldplay - A Rush of Blood to the Head
Helicopters - Barenaked Ladies - Maroon
Shake Up - The Dharmas - The Dharmas

3AM Still going. I hate making major chunks of changes to code without testing in between. One would think that this is just a matter of stopping at key points but when you're working on a project that is getting a little bit of an overhaul there's a lot of interconnected stuff that you've got to change all at once. Or at least my OCD tells me that's what I have to do.

I can feel the sleepyness in the back of my head right now. I think parts of my brain are starting to go in to a semi-sleep mode which is OK because they're usually related to creating memory and maintaining a sense of time and although it's sad that I won't remember any of this code in two days, I can still work like this.

Six hours until I've been awake for 24 hours. Seven until I've been at the office for 24 hours.

Northenden - Doves - Lost Sides
Perfect Memory - Remy Zero - The Golden Hum
Noche De Toxinas - Kinky - Kinky
Who Needs Sleep? - Barenaked Ladies - Stunt
Midnight - Jump - Between the Dim and the Dark
I'm Not Sleepings - Counting Crows - Recovering the Satellites
Howling - Morcheeba - Who Can You Trust?
Poses - Rufus Wainwright - Poses

4AM I'm feeling the sleep creep towards the front of my head and I can assure you that I hate this feeling. It's just... uncomfortable. Amazingly, MediaTemple support staff are fast-acting even at 4 AM. I've switched to playing with StatWatch but that's going slowly. I was thinking about how the daylight hours tomorrow will be pretty strange to me and I keep coming back to the "Perhaps this all-nighter thing is a bad idea" thought which I *think* is just the sleep depravation talking. Tomorrow will be a good day because tomorrow won't be just another day. I won't be waking up at all. I've been trying to break little habits that I get in to because they stiffle creativity and this is one way of getting a slightly different view of my day.

And yes, the iPod was on shuffle when it gave me "I'm not sleeping", "Midnight" and "Who needs sleep?" in a row.

Stoned - Dido - Life For Rent
Hit the Ground Running - Doves - Lost Sides
Warm Sound - Zero 7 - When It Falls
Intermittently - Barenaked Ladies - Maybe You Should Drive
Jane - Barenaked Ladies - Maybe You Should Drive
Where We're Calling From - Doves - The Last Broadcast

5AM BORED. Things just got really boring around here. Coding is not nearly as interesting as it was a couple hours ago and I've actually made negative progress on StatWatch. I guess it's back to my other plugin project. I need *something* working in a couple hours, right?

Darker - Doves - Lost Sides
Taj Mahal - Sam Roberts Band - We Were Born in a Flame
Endless Column - Blue Man Group - Audio
Ramona - Guster - Keep It Together
The Beast and Dragon, Adored - Spoon - Gimme Fiction
The Mitosis Waltz - Moxy Fruvous - The "C" Album

7AM All scripts came to a halt on my server for a while but I'm still here...

9AM So, I felt like I kept myself busy the entire night but I only have a thing or two that I can actually show that I've done. Feeling a little like a wasted night even when I know it wasn't. I'll compile results as soon as I'm ready to think straight.
