SMB3 Inspiration

August 24, 2004

A new design arrives.
As you may know, the last design was filler until I could come up with something better and it was keeping me from rushing to a new design that I didn't like. I like this. This has potential to move forward so it should stay around for a while.

I was inspired a few weeks ago when my friend picked up a NES on ebay with a few games and a new non-corrosive pin bank. If your Nintendo won't play anymore because of flashing screens or something similar, you MUST look in to this new pin connector. I have never seen a flashing screen on this NES with the new connector and I don't ever expect to see one. It plays games quite nicely for being ~20 years old. Anyway, one of the games he got with this system was Super Mario Bros. 3 and it's easily had the most play time since we set it up. The first time you play it after 10 years or so brings back memories of tactics and secrets that you don't even remember ever learning. I decided that the look of this game could use some touch ups and would make for an awesome design. I set to work on this design about two weeks ago and after parsing images from an emulator, I've come up with something I really like.

I hate to say that it's non done yet because all too often I've left some major pieces out of a design because I got bored with it by the time I was finished designing it. However, it has a lot of work that can be done on it and will be done on it in the future. First of all, stylesheets for World One and World Two are available right now via the pipes near the top of the page. I do intend to release all the other world-ly stylesheets over time and they don't take very long to make so keep an eye out. I'm using some stylesheet switcher code from A List Apart so your last stylesheet choice will stick. Dynamic comments from scriptygoddess are back. I'm using the link-template-to-file option in MovableType which has provided a much easier way to keep the files on my drive synced with the templates (with the help of WinSCP, of course).

The one thing I'm slightly worried about is copyright. I gave note at the bottom of this page that all the sprites are property of Nintendo but I'm wondering if I might get a letter asking me to remove it all simply because that's what they do. Any info on the legality of something like this would really be appreciated (could I call it a parody?). It would be unfortunate if that were to happen but I realized the risk before I started.

Any and all comments and suggestions are welcome. I intend on seeing just how far I can go to make the site a little more interactive with javascript now that I have something to work with so expect more in the coming weeks. I still have MTStats to work on so perhaps that'll get some attention now that I'm done the major work on this design.

OH MANN!!!!!!!! It looks AMAZING. You don't understand...Super Mario Brothers 3 is my favorite Nintento game. I am bringing my Nintendo to school so I can play it. This mushroom comment box is awesome, as is the Princess box that shows me my comments. Awesome job!

this is the BEST. DESIGN. EVER! i totally love every bit of it - the style changer, the headers, but the mushroom comment box is probably my favorite, though. great job!

d00d.

Excellent job. The images don't work at all in IE for OS X, but I know you're not coding for that anyway and besides, who the hell uses it?

Up for some real Mario3 soon?

You're right, it does bring back memories. Narly...

I'm in awe! This has to be one of the best designs I've seen in a long time. Great work.

Wow, just noticed the real time preview - I want one :)

That's so fucking HOTT...which you know must be a big deal cause I added the extra "T"

Absolutely brilliant work. And it looks so clean and bright!! We have to play together soon! Send me an IM and I'll be right there.

Wow, this is in-credible. V. impressive & creative. Props.

And yea, flashbacks come pouring through of playing SMB3 for hours on top of hours with my bro when I was a youngin. Good times. Thanks for the trip.

A minor typo in the comment mushroom: "Remember info", not "remeber."

Wow! this is one of the best designs I've seen in a while. It's really cook how you worked in all the imagery from Mario 3 into your blog (especially the MT and Creative Commons).
