ISO: A Geek Bag

October 25, 2004

Update: I found a geek bag!

My pockets hurt.
Since I've been in San Francisco, I've discovered my need for a geek bag. You may also know this item as a man bag, a man purse and many other fairly degrading names. This does not make the item any less useful to me.

Typically, I carry around my Kensington bag (which is the exact same price that it was when I got it 5 years ago, I believe) and I really like it. It's got a place for my laptop and all my little stuff in the front pocket. Sometimes, however, I find myself taking it to store a really small amount of stuff just because I don't want to keep it in my pockets. Othertimes I don't take my bag and just load up my pockets with stuff and that can be a little uncomfortable. Yesterday I was out with keys, an iPod, a wallet and cell phone all stuck in my two pants pockets. By the time I was home, I realized my need for a geek bag.

My ideal geek bag looks something like this: It's small and lightweight. I keep my cell phone and wallet in my pockets. I need space for keys, and iPod, some random cords and anything else small that I need to carry around. It doesn't need padding - I'm carefull enough with my bags and I'll just take my kensington bag if I need padding- and it definitely doesn't need compartments. I'd prefer something soft and clothy on the outside to the kevlarish outside of a timbuk2 bag although a waterproof, threadless material on the inside would be a great thing as well. I'd like a strap that is long enough so that the bag can hang above or below my waist and some kind of adjustable padding on the strap.

The point here is that I can't find a bag that matches the description I've put forth. The smallest timbuk2 bag is still too large and they're not clothy enough. I figured Think Geek would have something that I wanted but alas, they're without bags altogether.

Help! I need a geek bag!

When I'm in need of anything, I go to REI. Perhaps my love of REI is grounded in my obsession with fleece, but REI does supply an endless amount of practical and functional everything. I have a medium sized eagle creek bag from REI which I adore. Check it out, you might be pleasantly surprised:

I agree! REI has great stuff. Or you could just go to Sears and buy a really pretty purse. Maybe with roosters on it. They like that in Philly.
