One Great Thing

April 17, 2005

I've had a couple things on my mind recently. One of them relates to my refreshed interest in robotics (let us not forget the FIRST competitions of highschool - those couple weeks definitely bordered on obsession). The thought process is that perhaps the strictly virtual nature of programming for the web/desktop is what drives all my personal projects to stagnation. I really do enjoy coding when I get down to it but the motivation to get that far after an initial push is lacking. I don't completely discount the possibility that the issue is actually my motivation and not just working on a project that I can't physically touch. In that case, I'd hope that working on this same/similar skill in a new medium can teach me something that I can apply back to all my mediums. Along the same lines, I worked on a couple of fairly different projects at work this week as well as my own robotics research and playing with some ideas for the next iteration of fdrlib. I really liked having a hand in a million different things. I've always thought that I'll find One Great Thing that I'll excell at to the point that when you want to know something about this One Great Thing, you always come to me. This week was a Dozen Little Things and I wasn't bored or frustrated for a single moment. Just move to something else that needs to get done for a couple minutes and then return, slightly refreshed, to whatever you were working on.
